Final Grade Vikings Draft
I think Williamson is pretty raw as a route-runner to take number 7 overall. I think he is a player that is going to take at least two years to develop into a number 1 receiver. I think James is a boom-or-bust type pick, who besides being injury prone, only had one real good year in College. I like the Marcus Johnson pick. I think Dustin Fox while a good athelte, and able to contribute, I question his viability as a NFL-starter due to the lack of fluidty to play corner, and lack of height to play safety. I don't really see what Ciatrick Fason is expected to add. I obviously loved the Mosley pick. I liked that they signed in FA the second best kicker in my mind in the draft in Jonathan Nichols of Ole Miss, and although he probably was going to be an undrafted free agent, Adrian Ward has potential if he can get more physical, I like him as a practice-squad project.
Overall grade: B- (Too much risks in the first round picks)
Monday Night Thoughts
..He is good at kicking off.
...Two years ago was 27-28 from 50 yards or in.
...Last year was 24-29, not too bad. He can make field goals in the NFL. He looks like a much worse kicker than he is because our only memories are the game agaisnt the Bills, where he missed two extra points, and the Steelers/Jets playoff game. Give him a chance to compete against Jonathan Nichols the former Lou Groza award winner for Ole Miss, he beat out Nate Kaeding of the Chargers in 03, and was only 20-27 in o4. Nichols can kick off, but a rookie kicker with a rep missing pressure kicks would be problematic.
.The Vikings cut Blake Elliott, Mike Nattiel, and Kenny Mixon today. I have a problem with the Mixon release, because he had already redone his contract to about 1.1 million per year, he might not have made the team, but give him the chance to compete. I just don't like the move after he sacrificed for the team.

Round 6 and 7
I think the most accurate analysis of the Vikings first round
"I guess the theme of the Vikings draft has to be "Gamble on Greatness" and if their top two picks live up to their potential they could be great, however each has a major downside as well. James has some major durability concerns having missed the entire 2003 season with a hip injury and then battled through an ankle ailment as a senior after getting off to a tremendous start. Had he been healthy this past season James likely would have gone in the top three or four overall though...Williamson is raw though and the Vikings brass had better pray he develops into a star because he will forever be known as the guy they traded Randy Moss for."

Round 4 Options
They could go a developmental QB like Kyle Orton, a tough running back in Ciatrick Fason, a running back with verstailty who could return like Darren Sproles, or Marion Barber. There is talent at receiver in Fred Gibson, or a guy I like in Roydell Williams, or a punt return threat in Craig Bragg. Micheal Munoz/Wesley Britt or Ben Wilkerson are good SEC lineman of value. Antajj Hawthrone- Would be my choice if he slips to the Vikings. Although I like CJ Mosley-too. Micheal Boley is a very instictive outsider backer. Brandon Browner is someone I wanted in the third like Mosely and Hawthrone. I would like one of the DT's here. But we shall see.
Dustin Fox -Day 1 Grade
So what is my day 1 grade for the Vikings.-C. It was an average draft. They took a raw although talented receiver with the 7th overall pick. They then took another injury prone-defensive lineman at 18, although talented. Two boom or bust types. I liked the Johnson pick the best, but still they could have maybe gotten a gifted athlete there. I'm not the biggest fan of taking guards that high. Then the Dustin Fox pick, my thoughts should be pretty clear on. Are the Vikings a much better team than at the start of the day, no. But they do have a lot of potential that may or may not come through.
Marcus Johnson 2nd Round Pick
Strengths: Has terrific size and the frame to continue to get bigger. He has the size to engulf most DL if he gets in position. Takes good angles, is technically sound and disciplined. He plays with good toughness and is a feisty blocker that will work to finish. Shows good initial quickness for his size. Plays with leverage and fires off the ball low for such a tall offensive lineman. He is an experienced and durable player with very good savvy and awareness in pass pro. He has good quickness in his pass pro set. Is extremely difficult to get around in the short area because of his size and wingspan. He plays with good balance and body control in pass pro. He has long arms and shows good hand placement. If his upper body strength improves he can really become dominant after he locks on.
Weaknesses: He has adequate quickness in the short area but he's not a great athlete. Doesn't have great speed and the more room he's asked to cover the less effective he will become. Will struggle at times in space as a reach blocker. Has very minimal experience at OT position. Is quick in the short area but lacks great mobility. Will he be able to hold up on an island against NFL pass rushers if he moves outside to ROT at the next level? Has improved his strength but it's still not ideal. He can engulf defenders but doesn't show enough explosive initial pop or power.
Overall: Johnson redshirted in 2000 and played in a rotation at right guard as a redshirt freshman in 2001 before taking over as a fulltime starting right guard in his 2002 sophomore season. Johnson finished his career at Ole Miss as a four-year fulltime starter with 48-consecutive starts to his credit. He spent some time at OT because of injuries in 2004 but he spent the majority of his collegiate career at right guard. Johnson has impressive feet for his size and he is a technically sound, durable and consistent lineman with the size to engulf most defenders. He is coming off his most complete season and really improved his draft value as a senior. The big question now is whether or not Johnson can make the transition to tackle in the NFL? While we think there's a decent chance of him making it as a right tackle, we do believe that he's a much better fit inside. He doesn't have explosive upper body power and he also is much more comfortable in the short area than he is playing on the perimeter, where he doesn't have great mobility in that much space. Regardless, Johnson projects as a second round prospect with some versatility to back up both positions early in his career and the potential to develop into a solid starter in the near future.
Erasmus James health
Erasmus James
Scouts' take: Many felt James would be taken before Pollack, but concerns about his durability and the fact he didn't have a great combine probably caused him to slip just slightly. The good news is for Vikings fans is that James ranks just behind Pollack among DEs, making this a sound pick. While he needs to develop some lower body strength and improve his ability to defend the run, James has the initial quickness to beat the offensive lineman to the point of attack and the instincts to locate the ball carrier. He also has the athletic ability and closing speed to develop into a productive pas rusher. With this pick, Minnesota has done an excellent job of addressing it's two greatest needs in the first round.
Mel Kiper's take: A technically-sound player who understands the importance of leverage, James can rush the passer or play the run equally well. A slow 40 time hurt his stock, and he has to answer questions about his durability, but James started the 2004 season on a tear that would have made him a top 5-10 pick had he been healthy all season.
At 49, I am expecting Mike Nugent of Ohio State to be the pick. Don't rule out Barrett Rudd of Nebraska though. David Bass, and Chris Spencer are possibilties due to the versitality along the O-line.
Bingo-T.WIll at 7
As far as with 18. They would like David Pollack or Thomas Davis from what I am hearing, or to trade down. I wouldn't rule out a slipping Derrick Johnson, who called that, or maybe trading to team looking to get Aaron Rodgers who I also told you would slip big time. Erasmus James maybe. I expect them to trade down at 18, so they can get an extra pick between 49-80, so they can select Mike Nugent of Ohio State. I'll post again in a while. Wait Davis has just been selected, so look for David Pollack at 18 if he is there. I also wouldn't rule out Marcus Spears.
Here is the take of Scouts, INC and Mel Kiper, JR. on the Williamson pick.
Scouts' take: Having traded Randy Moss, the Vikings desperately need a receiver who is fast enough to draw some attention way from Nate Burleson. There will be surprise that Minnesota took Williamson with Mike Williams still on the board, but Williamson simply has better deep speed. Williamson's explosiveness and ability to make the first defender miss also makes him a threat to turn a short gain into a big play. He should immediately step in as the starter opposite Burleson, allowing Travis Taylor to move into the No. 3 role and Marcus Robinson to the No. 4, giving the Vikings a deep receiving corps. Mel Kiper's take: The Vikings were looking to add speed in the passing game, and Williamson's 4.3 speed does just that. He has decent size to go with that speed and will be a tremendous vertical threat, though he does need to work on his route-running and become more precise there. I would personally have preferred Mike Williams, but the Vikings got just what they were looking for here.
Final Thoughts
The draft doesn't look to be breaking down all that great for the Vikings from my viewpoint, but I will give comments throughout the day.
There should be a lot of trades, as evidenced by the complete chaos that was my final mock. I can't tell you what teams will do, only I can tell you what I am hearing they may do.
Next Commentary after pick 7 and the Mike Tice Press Conference.
It's 10:58 CST, and I am out
My Final Mock with some huge swerves
2. Miami-Braylon Edwards-I hear he's number one on their board, I would take a running back if I was them with their QB situation but whatever.
3. Cleveland-After losing the two players they covet, I am hearing will take Demarcus Ware of Troy from John Clayton or try to trade down to take David Pollack. It also wouldn't shock me if they took Antrelle Rolle. I think they will probably make a trade somewhere. Late Update: I am hearing Pollack may be the pick here as of 10:23 CST. I heard Ware about 9:45 AM
4. Chicago- I think Cedric Benson fits the best with thier power-running game, but they also could take one of the Auburn RB'S
5. Tampa Bay- Flip a coin between Mike Williams, Aaron Rodgers, and Cadillac Williams. I know Mike Williams had dinner last night with BUCS gm Bruce Allen. So I thought about putting him down. Then I figured I better stick with Cadillac.
6. Tennessee- Now a few people are hearing Pac-Man Jones here, so I'll stick with Dr.Z
7. Minnesota-Troy Williamson- I have become more convinced of this the last day, this doesn't mean more in favor of it. Although this doens't seem to be a type of pick to make sense with the switch in Offensive philosophies to justify trading Randy Moss. I want Shawne Merriman-here, and I am not convinced about Big Mike Williams
8. Arizona-Antrelle Rolle-Though they could go RB since Ronnie Brown is still on the board
9. Washingston-Carlos Rogers, though I wouldn't rule out Mike Williams, a trade with the Hated Cowboys or anything else.
10. Detroit-I don't think they are going to take Derrick Johnson, I think they'll take Pollack or Merriman. The reason they have enough LB's that can run, they need a pass-rusher. I think they could take Erasmus James here. But I think they'll take a Matt-Millen type player in David Pollack
11. Dallas-Shawne Merriman
12. San Diego- Mike Williams or Marcus Spears, I'll say Big Mike Williams stops his free fall here.
13. Houston-Ronnie Brown, they could go O-line but Brown is just too tempting.
14. Carolina- Jamaal Brown- I am hearing he has surpassed Alex Barron on teams boards, and I think he'll come in with this pick.
15. Kansas City- Derrick Johnson or Thomas Davis- I say Thomas Davis. I think by now a team like Tampa Bay would trade a first next year for Aaron Rodgers.
16. New Orleans- Let's go Aaron Rodgers, the Saints don't have a lot of confidence in Aaron Brooks, do I think he'll be a saint, no. But I wouldn't be shocked if he is the pick here. I'll give the folks Derrick Johnson in a normal pick
17. Cincinnati-I am hearing that they like Erasmus James, well that's all I have really heard.
18. Minnesota- This is going to get screwed up by trades. I'll stick with Derrick Johnson, but I think the pick will really be Marcus Spears as the best avalible player. They seem to want a physical RE as indicated by thier offer sheet to Aaron Kampmann. So I think Spears stands a great chance to be the pick. I will rail against this pick if it happens.
19. St.Louis- They wanted Jamaal Brown. They get Alex Barron.
20. Dallas-They really want Marcus Spears- who they would pick. Instead they take Spears for the sake of the mock, but in reality get Mark Clayton of Oklahoma. Aaron Rodgers is messing everything up. I am hearing that Luis Castillo could also be the pick here.
21. Jacksonville-I am hearing Fabian Washingston but I think it could be Matt Jones, or Marlin Jackson. I have heard strong indicators of Jones but I don't know after their Reggie Williams experience they will see that as such a good idea.
22. Balitmore- I would have them taking Mark Clayton in the mock, in reality they will get Travis Johnson of Flordia State, to fill their D-Tackle needs and end their pursuit of Corey Simon.
23. Seattle- It could be Dan Cody, or a linebacker reach, or local Khalif Barnes. I better start giving Dr.Z some cred and take Dan Cody.
24.Green Bay-Speaking of linebacker reaches. I hear Odell Thurman of Georgia will be the pick. I don't know if I buy it. But this isn't a Packer site, so have him. Although don't rule out Brodney Pool, or a young QB
25. Washingston-Jason Campbell-You want em, you got him.
26. Oakland- They like Justin Miller of Clemson I guess. He would make the perfect Raider all-pro potential with question marks.
27. Atlanta- They like a Cornerback they aren't sure if he will be there. Let's hope it is Marlin Jackson, cause I am tired of thinking.
28. San Diego-Khalif Barnes, though I could see Roddy White.
29. Indy-Mike Patterson, this is what I am hearing, though I wouldn't rule out Matt Roth of Iowa.
30. Pit-Heath Miller
31. Phil-Will prbably trade up, I'll give them Matt Jones just for balance.
32. NE-I am sticking with Barrett Rudd of Nebraska.

Logic Behind Thursday Night Mock
. DR.Z is considered the best authority for me followed by Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News followed by those with ESPN.com
. I think Derrick Johnson's lack of Physical play is going to cause him to slide. I think Aaron Rodgers doesn't really have a team that wants to invest in him that high.
. I think Khalif Barnes' great performance in the Bowl Games has him going higher than some think.
.
My Mock as of Thursday Night
1. SF-Alex Smith
2. Mia-It could be Ronnie Brown, or Braylon Edwards. I am hearing little buzz about Aaron Rodgers here. I will go Brown for now. This could change by Saturday.
3. Clev- I am hearing not to rule out Antrelle Rolle here, but it looks like Braylon Edwards
4. Chi-Cedric Benson
5. TB-Cadillac Williams, although don't rule out Aaron Rodgers at this point.
6. Ten-Either Rolle or Pac-Man Jones. I would have said Rolle till I read the best football mind today DR.Z- I will go with the Z-MAN for now.
7.MN-I will agree with what I am hearing today, and say the Vikings take Troy Williamson. I have been hearing this on both KFAN and ESPN, as Mike Williams is slipping due to his lack of speed.
8.Ariz-A.Rolle, pretty simple
9.WSH-C.Rogers
10. Det-Some might say Aaron Rodgers, some Derrick Johnson, some Shawne Merriman, and some Demarcus Ware, some Erasmus James so I really don't know here. I will surpise people and say Erasmus James, they don't really need Derrick Johnson.
11. Dal-Demarcus Ware just slightly over Shawne Merriman
12. SD-Could be Merriman who is the best pass-rusher here, it could also be Marcus Spears, or big Mike Williams. I don't think they take a 3-4 end here. Mike Williams I think they would prefer a guy to stretch the field. I will go Shawne Merriman for now.
13. Hou-DR.Z points to Alex Barron, they made a run at Orlando Pace, he's a good pass-blocker he's the pick. But wait Mike Williams is still on the board.
14. Car-They would like Alex Barron. So I'll make him the pick.
15. KC-I can't believe that DR.Z would name his source here in Dick Vermeil to take Thomas Davis. But Len Pasquarelli seems to sort of agree. I think Davis' terrific pro-day time makes him the pick. but I better give someone Aaron Rodgers.
16. NO- I think Thomas Davis is going to be the pick here.
17. CIN-They are going to go defense it looks like David Pollack becomes thier pick, I'll stick with the Z-Man
18. MN- Derrick Johnson slips to em'. They would prefer a rush-end but his lack of physical play causes him to slide.
19. STL- It looks like everyone thinks Jamaal Brown of Oklahoma
20. Dal-Marcus Spears as they cheer.
21. Jac-Marlin Jackson, though DR.Z goes different, he gave no reason though, Del-Rio goes Defense.
22. Bal-Mark Clayton come on down.
23. Sea- Dan Cody, the ESPN draft special and DR.Z go with him. I don't know, so I will too.
24. GB-Shaun Cody or Travis Johnson. Nah, I am going with Brodney Pool of Oklahoma.
25. Was- Jason Campbell
26. Oak-Fabian Washingston with his unbelievable speed seems like a Raider here.
27. ATL-Travis Johnson works here.
28. SD- Khalif Barnes to quote Monty Burns "excellent"
29. IND-Shaun Cody works here.
30. Pit-Heath Miller
31. Phil-Matt Jones
32. NE- Barrett Rudd- I stated this here, first and I am sticking with it.
I got confused during this at times, this will be reworked after another day of reports.

No deal for now
Yahoo Reports
. Also I am hearing reports not to discount the Vikings if they stay at 7 taking Troy Williamson of South Carolina, my negative thoughts on this have already been made known. But Chris Mortensen gave him to the Vikings in his mock on the Dan Patrick show today.c
His Mock went as such
1. SF-A.SMITH
2. MIA-R.BROWN
3.CLEV-B.EDWARDS
4. CHI-C.BENSON
5.TB-C.WILLIAMS
6.TEN-M.WILLIAMS
7.MN-T.WILLIAMSON
8. ARIZ-A.ROLLE
9.WASH-C.ROGERS
. In another tidbit I have heard from multiple sources national sources that not to discount Antrell Rolle as high as number 3.
.Possibly, one more update today, I am going to the Twins game tonight, don't worry though I will be thinking about the draft, the whole time I am there.

Tuesday Night Notes
. Tonight, I will post on what I see the Vikings biggest needs as.
. 1- A receiver who can stretch the field, and compete for the number one role. People are underestimating Nate Burleson's ability to get deep, first of all. If you remember in Week 15, He got deep against Detriot corners twice for touchdowns of 36 and 37 yards. He had catches of 68 and 42 yards against the Packers a week later. He then beat his man for the Redskins and made a rare dropped what would have been a sure 54 yard touchdown against the Redskins. He also had a specutacular punt return against the Colts for a touchdown. So he can produce big-plays. A true speed threat would seem to be prefered like a Jerome Mathis in Round 2 to compliment Burleson. But a receiver that creates Physical mismatches like Mike Williams, or possibly the number one player in the draft like Braylon Edwards would help. It is probably most helpful if the receiver could be able to draw a double-team. This is what would make a Mike Williams or a Braylon Edwards potentially appealing.
2-A Physical Safety- I have said that Wille Offord could fill this role, as I was impressed by his playoff starts. I am only looking for moderate coverage skills, but the ability to be a threat of delivering a big hit when a Wide-Receiver comes in on a slant, like Rodney Harrison does for the Patriots. Neither Sharper, not Chavous brings this presence. The guy I see most to my liking in this area is Thomas Davis, that's why I'll be hoping for him at number 18 if he is still on the board.
3-A pass-rushing end. Udeze could develop into this player, but he doesn't bring big-time speed here. He also played Left End in college. Lance Johnstone probably will start to decline, and the Vikings don't have another real-accomplished pass-rush threat on their roster. If they can get this guy. They're D-line makeover will be complete. This is why I have advocated for Shawne Merriman if neither of the top two receivers are there. A name like a Erasmus James or Demarcus Ware bears watching at 18. A guy like Justin Tuck could slip into round 2.
4- A Kicker- I think Aaron Elling could be a decent kicker for them this year. I emphaize the words could and decent. I didn't think he was too bad in 2003. He in fact made a 46 yarder in the fourth quarter against Arizona. But to get a guy like Mike Nugent in round 2 or 3, and to hopefully secure that position for years to come would be pretty sweet.
5- A back-up Nose Tackle. Someone that can be a back-up run stuffing nose tackle on running downs. Someone like a CJ Mosley could fit the bill here.
6. I would say right guard since they don't really have any experienced starters but between Adam Goldberg, Nat Dorsey, and Shannon Snell. I would think they have enough young talent to fill that position. But if a lineman they like is avalible, go for it.
7. They could also draft a potential nickle-corner in the later rounds. This would be for when Brian Williams likely leaves after next year.
8. I'm not too keen on drafting a linebacker unless it is of great value, this is not because their linebacking corps I see as real strong. I think they have plenty of young, undisciplined linebackers they are trying to develop, and I don't think another one would add much to the mix.

The winds they are changing
I know at 2, Miami wants to trade down. I also know that they liked Alex Smith. I had heard for weeks, Ronnie Brown at 2. This pick is totally up in the air.
Cleveland at 3, I am hearing Braylon Edwards, based on Phil Savage's value system. I have also heard that they don't like Aaron Rodgers.
Chicago at 4, according to Peter King he is under the impression the Bears are going Cedric Benson, where as reports I have heard from Chicago point to Cadillac Williams.
Tampa Bay-There is nothing all that new with them since my post thursday.
This holds true for Tennessee at 6, as it looks like Antrelle Rolle at the moment, though it could shift to big Mike Williams.
So what does this mean for the Vikings? I see basic uncertainty till Saturday Morning. I have heard Ronnie Brown in a trade-up mentioned by a few sources like Rosen's Sports Sunday, and Peter King. I heard Frank Gilliam Vikings Senior Player Personnel Consultant throw out smoke screens last -night on Rosen's Sports Sunday. So I have very little besides this.

Sunday Night Notes
. Rumors are starting to surface about the Vikings trading 7 and 18 to move up to 2. So they can take Braylon Edwards. Who I can't decide if Cleveland would take him or Alex Smith. After Cleveland there is no guarnatee someone would take him before the Vikings. I don't like this potential move as I feel they could get a talent like a Shawne Merriman or Cedric Benson at 7, then grab a receiver like a Mark Clayton or a safety like Thomas Davis at 18. This would improve the team. I would only do this if they are convinced that Braylon Edwards will be a Pro-Bowl level player in the NFL. I also question going so high for a receiver that has good not great speed.
. I will keep putting out thoughts throughout this week. I can't decide if my final mock will be Friday or Saturday. It depends if I want to wait for Rick Gosselin's Mock to come out to break it all down.

Thursday Notes
. Len Pasquarelli of espn.com agrees with me regarding my assesemnent of Derrick Johnson, and why I would have Shawne Merriman as the top defender in the draft.
. I think one strength Braylon Edwards has over Mike Williams is the ability to get a corner to turn his hips in coverage.
. Viking Update has a new mock that can be accessed at http://vikings.scout.com/2/357836.html
. Reggie Fowler's partners were in the Twin Cities, to try to promote a new Stadium. I haven't really commented much on the Vikings sale recently, due to draft musings. It keeps looking less likely by the day that Reggie Fowler has the assets to buy the team. This is only troublesome if the Vikings due to Red McCombs having to possibly keeping owning the team. McCombs could be problematic if he wants to save money by trading out of the 7th spot, for less than fair value.
. My post is what I am hearing as of today regarding the top 6 picks before the Vikings.
.San Fransisco-John Clayton says on ESPN insider there is about a 90 percent probablity that Aaron Rodgers gets a deal done, before early next week. So I am confident in my assesment here.
. Miami-They want to trade down, possibly with Tampa. If they stay here. I haven't seen a lot lean to Ronnie Brown, but don't discount them picking Alex Smith I guess either. So I would say I have a decent amount of confidence that barring a trade Ronnie Brown is the pick.
. Cleveland-I heard from John Clayton, I believe, that they think much higher of Alex Smith than Aaron Rodgers. That Romeo Crennel would probably take Smith if he was there. If he is not they could go best avalible player option in Braylon Edwards, or try to trade down. I have a decent amount of confidence that barring trades that Alex Smith will be the pick. There are rumors out there that Braylon Edwards blew off a meeting with Browns brass last week.
.Chicago-Two weeks ago I would have said the Bears were going to take Braylon Edwards, last week I thought Cedric Benson or Mike Williams, now I am hearing Cadillac Williams. This pick other than knowing it is probably going to be a RB or a WR is throwing me for a loop. I would lean very slightly towards Braylon Edwards as of tonight, with this pick though. But this spot is throwing me for a loop.
.Tampa Bay-I am hearing a possible trade up for Alex Smith, or they could take Mike Williams. It still seems though that Jon Gruden fell in love with Cadillac Williams at the Senior Bowl, and will take him here.
. Tennessee-I keep hearing Antrell Rolle with this pick. There is also the thought they could go with Mike Williams, but the indications hear have them leaning toward Antrelle Rolle.
. So this would leave both Mike Williams, and Cedric Benson for the Vikings. I keep hearing that the Vikings could very well take Cedric, even if Mike Williams is there. I haven't heard any other names, but it should be noted that ever since the Ryan Sims debacle, and that was great in hindsight. They seem to play things close to the vest so don't rule out a Derrick Johnson, or a Shawne Merriman. I would doubt they take Troy Williamson as I stated earlier. It should be noted that this is a deep draft for talent at the Wide Receiver Position.
. At 18 I believe the Vikings go best player. I would guess the names of highest prominence here would be David Pollack-DE-Georgia, Thomas Davis-S-Georgia, Mark Clayton-WR-Oklahoma, or maybe an Erasmus James-DE Wisconsin.
. In Round 2- I would actually be surpised if they took a kicker this high, due to their bad experience with Eddie Johnson. They could look G here, but I thought they were high on both Dorsey and Goldberg. They have expressed intrest in both Kevin Burnett-LB-Tennessee who could be hear, and Justin Tuck-DE Notre Dame. If they were to look G-like David Bass of Michigan, Chris Spencer of Ole Miss, Marcus Johnson of Ole Miss, Evan Mathis of Alabama, or a fast riser like Central Michigan's Eric Ghiacuic. There should be talented receivers avalible like a Roydell Williams of Tulane, Roscoe Parrish of Miami, Terrence Murphy of Texas A&M, Jerome Mathis of Hampton, Vincent Jackson of Nothern Colorado, or the fast rising Mark Bradley of Oklahoma. Young safety prospects could be on the horizon in Round 2 like Brandon Browner of Oregon State, Gerald Sensabaugh of North Carolina.
In Round 3 keep your eye out for CJ Moseley a big DT for Missouri. The Vikings could also look at players who could slide for various factors like DB Corey Webster of LSU, or WR'S Chris Henry of West Virgina, or Fred Gibson of Georgia.
That's all, talk to you Sunday.

Wed. Afternoon Notes
Seems not that bad at the start. They face two teams they should be better than at home. With a medicore Cincy team at home sandwiched in between. They then play at Atlanta in their first real tough game. Then a trip to Chicago. This is followed by home games versus Green Bay and Detroit with a road trip to Carolina sandwiched in between. Followed by a couple of road games in tough places versus Green Bay and versus the Giants. The last six games shouldn't be as difficult. With home games against STL, PIT, CLEV, and Chi with road games at Det, and Bal. There is nothing really bad on this schedule. In fact they have the a chance to get out of the gate, and end strong, so it is alright in those regards.
Vikings sign Aaron Kampmannto an offer-sheet. If the Packers don't match, Green Bay gets a fifth-round pick.
Scouts INC. gives the following Scouting Report
Comment:
Kampman is an overachiever that makes up for his lack of natural tools with tenacity and hard work. He generally plays with sound technique and is a versatile defensive lineman capable of providing depth across the board. Has good size, is aggressive at the point of attack and shows the ability to hold up against the run when he plays with leverage. Does a nice job using his hands to disengage blocks, keeps his feet moving and can be very physical at times. However, while Kampman made some strides in '03, he still lacks ideal speed for an end and is undersized as a tackle. Lacks great burst as a pass rusher off the edge and does not turn the corner consistently enough. Doesn't always play with good leverage, will lose his base against the run and lets offensive lineman get into his body too often. Overall, Kampman has good versatility, and has proven capable of filling in over a short period of time.
Kampmann had more tackles than anyone on the Packers D-line last year with 77. This is a good number for a Defensive End. Basically they either sign him and cost the Packers a Defensive lineman or they screw up the Packers Cap. I don't see him as a player of need, due to his primary position being Left End, where the Vikings have a developing Darrion Scott who will be backed up by Kenny Mixon, who took one for the team in having his pay cut. Basically a no lose move. It could also maybe give the Vikings a player in Darrion Scott who could be of intrigue to a team like the Browns, who plan to play a 3-4, if the Vikings try to move up in the draft.
Scouts, INC breaks down the Vikings draft strategy as such on ESPN Insider
Few NFL teams have upgraded their roster as much as the Vikings have during the 2005 free-agency period. Despite several off-the-field distractions and a changing of the guard in ownership, Rob Brzezinski (VP of football operations), Scott Studwell (director of college scouting), and Mike Tice (head coach) have been able to keep their focus.
For the second consecutive season in 2004, the Vikings collapsed down the stretch, largely because of a defense (28th in the NFL) that couldn't keep up with the offense (4th in the NFL). So the front office decided to take initiative by signing five potential new starters: NT Pat Williams, OLB Napoleon Harris, ILB Sam Cowart, DC Fred Smoot and DS Darren Sharper.
There's no denying WR Randy Moss' (Raiders) talent. However, by trading Moss the team rids itself of its most disruptive individual, while strengthening its defense with the addition of Harris and acquiring a second first-round pick in the upcoming draft. The Vikings will unquestionably miss Moss' rare playmaking abilities, but they do have good depth at wide receiver with Nate Burleson, Marcus Robinson and newly signed Travis Taylor to go along with a deep stable of running backs and one of the league's best quarterbacks in Daunte Culpepper. Furthermore, by acquiring the seventh overall pick from the Raiders in the Moss deal, the Vikes are in position to draft one of this year's elite wide receiver prospects Michigan's Braylon Edwards or USC's Mike Williams.
The only potential kink in the armor is if Edwards and Williams fly off the board in the first five picks, which seems to be about a 50-50 proposition. One possibility is for the Vikings to package a pick in a later round to move up two or three spots to secure Edwards or Williams.
Otherwise, Minnesota could look to move down a few spots to acquire an extra day-one pick, while still being in position to draft a vertical threat in South Carolina's Troy Williamson or an explosive pass-rushing prospect such as Maryland's Shawne Merriman, who would serve as an excellent complement opposite last year's top pick, DE Kenechi Udeze. Regardless, we expect the Vikings to come out of the first round with top prospects at the wide receiver and defensive end positions.
Perhaps the team's biggest need is at offensive guard, where it currently is without a legitimate starter on the left side. Tice is an offensive line guru who made his name in this league molding late-round and free-agent players into solid NFL starters. However, with such a glaring need at the LOG position, it wouldn't surprise us if the team used one of its picks in the second (49) or third round (80) on one of the elite guard prospects in this year's class, which include Virginia's Elton Brown, Fresno State's Logan Mankins, Utah's Chris Kemoeatu and Alabama's Evan Mathis.
What makes the Vikings day-one draft situation interesting is that they have one of the bigger needs for a starting place-kicker. There's only one can't-miss prospect in this year's group, Ohio State's Mike Nugent, and he might cost a second-round pick. If the Vikings are willing to make the move, they'll have to put their guard need on hold until the third round.
As far as day two is concerned, the Vikings have a pick near the middle in each of the final four rounds. At that point, look for the team to spend the majority of its focus on finding depth at defensive tackle, a backup for Matt Birk at center and a developmental quarterback to push Shaun Hill as the No. 3.

Minnesota has hit on all of its last three first-round picks. While LOT Bryant McKinnie ('02) doesn't always dominate the point of attack, he has been a starter since his rookie season and should only continue to get better with added experience.
DT Kevin Williams ('04) is close to impossible to block with one man and DE Kenechi Udeze ('04) started 13 games last year. The Vikings also have had success finding playmakers such as WR Nate Burleson ('03) and RB Onterrio Smith ('03) in the middle rounds.

I don't think people would be too disappointed when they see who has them picking.

Number 18 Pick
Here are the options-On the Defensive Side of the Ball.
Erasmus James-DE-Wisconsin-
Strengths: Great pass-rushing moves. Strong upper body. Possesses atheletic moves to get to the Quarterback. Long arms. Quick first step with good insticts. Shown ability to beat double teams to get to Quarterback. Decent tackler, who can play the run.
Weaknesses: Durablity. Lacks the speed of a Dwight Freeney, or Jevon Kearse. He was also surronded by great D-line talent at Wisconsin. The Hip and Ankle injuries are the biggest concerns.
Overall: He is not the prospect Shawne Merriman is. His injury history is a big concern for teams in the first round. This guy is a boom-or bust selection. I wouldn't take him probably higher than about 25 if I had only had one First, but with two like the Vikings, you consider rolling the dice. Also, you gotta wonder about rolling the dice two years in a row on injury prone ends.
David Pollack-DE-Georiga
Strengths: Incredible insticts. Terrifc motor, and a very good tackler. Good use of hands that he combines with good strength and quickness to beat his man. Able to change directions. Very good set of pass-rush moves.
Weaknesses: Much like James, he doesn't have explosive speed. Could have trouble with the big tackles, he will see on an every week basis in the NFL.
Overall: Scouts, INC considers him the best end prospect in the draft. I don't see him as a dominant rusher in the NFL, but a very solid NFL player.
Marcus Spears-DE-LSU
Strengths: Large at 310 lbs, would best translate as a 3-4 end. Very good versus the run. Strong with very good atheletic ability for a player his size. Good insticts. Quicker than he is fast. Can stay in lanes.
Weaknesses: I don't know where he would play in the Vikings defense. He could start at LE, but Darrion Scott seems capable there, and he is backed up by Kenny Mixon. He doesn't have the Skills to play left end. He could be best at undertackle, where the Vikings have an all-pro. Lack of speed, and ability to miss tackles, also a concern.
Overall: See above, I would be very surpised if he is the Vikings pick.
Demarcus Ware-DE-Troy
Strengths: Fastest DE to consider. He came to Troy as a 165 lb, WR. Quick first step, which makes him a pass-rushing threat combined with speed. Fast riser could go as high as number 13 to the Texans. High motor, and active versus the run.
Weaknesses: Only around 250 lbs, could be in the mode of a Lance Johnstone, a situtional rusher at this point in his career. Lacks the stregnth to beat blocks of a Shawne Merriman. No real position in 4-3 at this stage in his career
Overall: A very intriguing prospect, but will need to bulk up to make a big impact on the next level. Maybe, a bit too much of a project for my liking at 18.
Dan Cody-DE-Oklahoma
Strengths: Quick, institictive and tough. Great motor. Can play the run. Very intelligent defender. Above average first steps, and the type of worker that teams want.
Weaknesses: Suffers from clinical depression. Am I being insenstive maybe, but remember the last player the Vikings took with such issues in the 1st round. Lacks leg strength to get free from offensive tackles. He also doesn't possess great size, or speed.
Overall: Cody is slipping a bit because of concerns about size and stregth at the next level. You also have to figure that he could slip a bit because of his depression.
Note: I do not hope to offend people with clinical depression by this, but I am trying to be honest in my assesment. Clinical depression is an illness that needs to be treated. I offer my full support to all going through this struggle, which people in my family have had to endure.
Matt Roth-DE-Iowa
Strengths: Good insticts, and can play both the run and the pass. Good size combines with a good motor. Knows how to use his hands. Good first steps. Better doing power rushes which will be harder to do in the NFL.
Weaknesses: lack of speed to turn the corner. Can get overagressive at times.
Overall: More of a Grant Wistrom-type a solid player versus the run with the ability to rush the passer somewhat. Maybe not what the Vikings are exactly looking for.
Thomas Davis-S/LB-Georgia
Strengths: Big time hitter, that is very tough, and agressive. Shows very capable speed at UGA's pro-day. Can beat blocks, great against the run. Terrific tackler. Would be very tough to get by in the first 5 yards, at the pro-level. Good insticts. He can be effective on the blitz.
Weaknesses: Not great hip movement. Isn't as good against the pass as the run. Some think he might be more suited to LB in the pros. Can get overagressive at times. Will have trouble playing the pass.
Overall: Davis is Roy Williams minus the pass coverage ablity. He could play SS on a team like the Vikings due to their depth at the Cornerback position. He wouldn't be giving away any speed to their current SS Corey Chavous either. Some don't like him. I think he will be a solid starter in the NFL. I would consider him at 18.
Kevin Burnett-OLB-Tennessee
Strengths: Fast, and tough. Good angles on a running plays. Can get through traffic, very good range. Better tackler than Derrick Johnson, who can play the pass also. Can rush the passer when needs to.
Weaknesses: Durablity, and he needs better insticts.
Overall: Not what the Vikings really need, he really is no different than there other young linebackers. A better tackler than Derrick Johnson, but lacks his insticts. Rule him out at 18, but not at 50.
Here are the Offensive Options
Mark Clayton-WR-Oklahoma
Strengths: Terrific quickness, which will get people open. Great route runner. Great body control, the speed to get deep. Catches the ball in stride, elusive runner after the catch.
Weaknesses: Only real weakness is a lack of size.
Overall: If they don't go wide receiver at 7, I want Clayton at 18.
Troy Williamson-WR-South Carolina-
Strengths: World-class speed, with good size. Most dangerous as a deep threat. Can adjust and make the difficult catch.
Weaknesses: Raw and can be jammed. Not a very good route runner, not a whole lot more than a deep threat at this stage of his career.
Overall: I see him as an Alvin Harper, Wille Gault type, not a number one receiver. I really don't want him at 7, and I wouldn't be real nuts about him at 18.
Roddy White-WR-UAB
Strengths: Good vertical threat at 6'1 with 4.45 speed. Mel Kiper, JR. is high on him. Good runner after the catch.
Weaknesses: Same as Williamson ahs trouble running routes. He also lacks a real quick first two steps, not very good for a receiver.
Overall: Home run potential, and not that different from Williamson. So my feelings on him, you can probably guess.
Scouts INC. Mock
Shawne Merriman* | OLB/DE | Maryland
The Vikings have few needs to address and can really focus in on the ones they do have with two first round picks thanks to the Randy Moss (Raiders) deal. Adding a blue chip wide receiver is still a need but if Edwards and Williams are already off the board by the time they pick, the Vikings can get a better value in the form of a pass rusher. Merriman has the speed, athleticism and instincts to immediately upgrade the Vikings defense as an edge rusher opposite Kenechi Udeze, and he has the frame to eventually develop into a fulltime starter.
Mark Clayton | WR | Oklahoma
In all reality, the Vikings have great depth at wide receiver but they lack a premier No. 1 now that Moss is gone. The team did sign Travis Taylor in free agency but they plan on using him in the slot. Nate Burleson is entrenched as a starter but Marcus Robinson is aging and inconsistent. If the team doesn't get one of the two elite receiver prospects -- Edwards and Williams -- with it first pick, Clayton would be a good value at No. 18. He lacks elite size but has everything else scouts look for in a first round wide receiver prospect, including quickness, speed and reliable hands.
I would love this first round. To get an edge rusher in the mode of Chris Doleman, and to combine that with a receiver I really like in Mark Clayton, due to his quickness. Clayton reminds me of smaller Marvin Harrison. Later tonight, my thoughts on the Vikings number 18 pick.

Merriman vs Johnson Debate-Best Defender in Draft for Vikings
Strengths-Great athelte, and highly productive during college. Effective from sideline to sideline with blitz capablity. Good motor. Good vision on the field, and takes good steps. Great ability in the passing game due to his fluidity. Long Arms. Good speed can defend in zone and man to man versus the pass.
Weaknesses-Can miss tackles, and has trouble once engaged in blocks. Not a very physical tackler. Can be run at, lacks strength.
Overall analysis: While Johnson is a great specimen, I have serious concerns about his stregth and tackling ability. He is a rangy player when able to roam free, or blitz. But this doesn't really seperate guys in the NFL. Also his best position in the pros translates to a 4-3 WLB, this is not a very important position in a 4-3. I think his physical tools can make him a good player, I am not convinced he can be a big time difference maker from his position in the Vikings scheme. This is why I believe the best defensive player for the Vikings to take and the guy I would take after Braylon Edwards, or Mike Williams is Maryland's Shawne Merriman
Why?
Strengths: Dan Pompei calls him "A shark in Shoulder Pads...the Most explosive defender in the draft...when he hits people they go backwards." Merriman has a quick first step, and great stregth. He has adequate size for a Rush End at 274 LBS, to go with 4.65 speed. Great motor, would have unbelievable range at DE. Good insticts, and a good tackler. Explosive hitter with great leaping ablity. Tough Player. I see him in the mold of a Chris Doleman who was very similar to Merriman coming out.
Weaknesses: Could get better with hands, and needs to use power more to shed blocks. Was more of an hybird rusher, than a true 4-3 rusher at Maryland.
Overall: I think Merriman will be a star. He is still somewhat raw, but had 17 tackles for loss to go with 8.5 sacks this year, without much talent around him. Rumor has him that Bill Parcells thinks he could be a Lawrence Taylor type player. He has awesome pass-rush potential due to his stregth, and speed combination. He will reak havoc in the NFL in my opinion. This is why I consider him to be the best defensive player in this draft.

Saturday Morning Notes
. Tom Peliasero this morning said the Vikings clearly prefer Cedric Benson as their running back of choice. So we will see.
. Mike Williams is rising up the draft boards, and I believe that he is likely to be taken before Braylon Edwards.
. Lack of height is slipping Pac-Man Jones down draft boards.
. The reason the Vikings might take a Defensive End with their first pick is so that they can have Kenechi Udeze play more Left End, where he excelled at College. Since they have too young ends who are pretty good against the run, their intrest in an end would be as a Pass-Rushing specialist that is why a David Pollack, or Erasmus James is a more likely choice than say a Marcus Spears.
. Players rising up draft boards-Matt Jones-WR-Arkansas, Demarcus Ware-DE/LB-Troy, Troy Williamson-WR-South Carolina, Marlin Jackson-CB-Michigan, Antrelle Rolle-DB-Miami, Carlos Rogers-DB-Auburn, and Khalif Barnes-T-Washingston
Players falling down-Pac-Man Jones-DB-West Virgina, Dan Cody-DE-Oklahoma, Elton Brown-G-Virgina, and Channing Crowder-LB-Flordia
.Despite what John Clayton says the Vikings willnot take Troy Williamson at 7, mark it down. He is way too raw as a route-runner, and didn't have great college productivity. They value college production when drafting players, and at this stage in his career, he would be nothing more than a deep threat.

First Round Mock
I spent a few hours on this reading from various team reports along with other mockdrafts
1. San Fransisco- Aaron Rodgers-QB-California
2. Miami-Ronnie Brown-RB-Auburn
3. Cleveland- Wants to ideally trade down, don't know
if they will though. This is where things could get
really intresting. I can't decide between Braylon
Edwards, or Alex Smith. I will lean every so slightly
to Alex Smith-now, they could even go for one of the
draft's top defensive players.
4. Chicago- I have heard it could be Mike Williams, it
could be Braylon Edwards, or one the other two running
backs. Cedric Benson is who I am leaning to her since
I saw it on Bear Report
5. Tampa Bay-Indications seem to have Tampa taking
Cadillac Williams since he was coached by Jon Gruden
at the Senior Bowl.
6. Tennessee-Mike Williams- This pick I really have no
clue, it could be Antrell Rolle, or even Alex Barron.
7. Minnesota-Braylon Edwards-finally a pick I didn't
have to think about. I am starting to actually hear
that Williams will go ahead of Edwards.
8. Arizona-Antrell Rolle-This I am faily confident of
if the draft breaks down like this.
9. Washingston-I am going out on a limb here not in
that they are taking a cornerback, but that it will be
Carlos Rogers of Auburn, not Pac-Man Jones, due to the
fact that Rogers is more physical, 4 inches taller,
and runs a 4.4-40
10. Detroit-They could go Alex Barron as they have a
need at RT, they could go with a need at de-or OLB in
guys like Shawne Merriman, Derrick Johnson, David
Pollack, or Marcus Spears- I am leaning ever so
slightly to Alex Barron after reading from
lionsfans.com-they Scouts affilate
11.Dallas-They want to go to a 3-4, so it looks like
Shawne Merriman would be a better fit than Derrick
Johnson here. This is what the Ranch Report says.
12. San Diego-Derrick Johnson is just too tempting for
the Chargers here.
13. Houston-Could use a Linebacker- I think they are
going to look at a 3-4 Linebacker making David Pollack
and Demarcus Ware-the most likely choices. But I will
go with another surpise and give them Khalif Barnes of
Washington whose stock has skyrocketed due to his
post-season play.
14. Carolina- The two names I am hearing are Troy
Williamson and Thomas Davis, they would have loved to
get Barnes though. I will give the nod to Troy
Williamson here, and I don't know why.
15. Kansas City-WarPaint Illustrated gives them Marcus
Spears, even if they trade for Patrick Surtain,
Pac-Man Jones represents the best value. I'll go
Pac-Man here.
16. New Orleans-They are going Defense-Thomas Davis
seems to be who the folks seem to indicate.
17. Cincinnati-They feel their big weakness is Run D-
so I give them Travis Johnson DT-Flordia State.
18. Vikings- They will want the best pass-rusher
avalible here, I would think making it either David
Pollack, or Erasmus James. Demarcus Ware would also be
possible. Due to their relative lack of needs, and the
fact that they only really need him to develop as a
pass-rusher I would go Erasmus James of Wisconsin.
19. St.Louis Rams-GridIron Gateway-Speaks of as their
biggest need is along the O-Line, and this is backed
up by Scouts, INC. I thought they could go for a
Defensive End, but they seem to have a more pressing
need at Right Tackle- Jamaal Brown-
20.Dallas Cowboys-Could use a 3-4 End so they take
Marcus Spears of LSU
21.Jacksonville-Would have loved Spears, they would
probably prefer David Pollack or Demarcus Ware
play-left end, where they are not best suited. I am
thinking cornerback either Marlin Jackson, or Justin
Miller. I think they go Marlin Jackson who is moving
back up draft boards.
22. Balitmore- Mark Clayton-WR-Oklahoma
23. Seattle-David Pollack-DE Georgia
24. Green Bay-Brodney Pool-S Oklahoma
25. Denver-I really have no clue, the best players for
them here are along the d-line, where they already
have about a dozen players under contract. There are
no o-lineman here of value. They could also go
corner. What about a tight-end? I'll give them the
highest ranked player of need on Mel Kiper's big
board- Heath Miller-TE Virgina (Don't ask why)
26-NY Jets-Fabian Washingston-DB Nebraska
27-Atlanta- Shaun Cody-DT USC
28-San Diego-They want a receiver-Jerome Mathis of
Hampton come on down.
29-Indianpolis-Daryl Blackstock- LB-Virgina-This is
getting late
30. Pittsburgh-Justin Miller-DB Clemson
31. Philadelphia-They want a DE, or a WR- They like
Demarcus Ware- I guess, and I don't have him going as
high as he will.
32. New England- They have rebuilt their D-Line, now
they turn to LB Core-Barrett Rudd seems to be the guy.
Players that slip out of first round
1. Matt Roth-DE Iowa
2. Channing Crowder-LB-Flordia
3. Roddy White-WR UAB
4. Dan Cody-DE-Oklahoma
5. Matt Jones-WR-Arkansas
Vikings
2. Mike Nugent-K Ohio State
I will re-do this at least once more before the draft.

Best Places to look for draft information
1. Dr. Z (Paul Zimmerman) on CNNSI.Com-This guy is the best football guy in the country, he breaks down game tape like no one else, with great connections in the business. His mock will come out right before the draft, read it. Or Go to your library and copy it from SI.
2. Scouts,INC-These guys do a terrific job of scouting, and if you get their info on ESPN insider, read it.
3. Mel Kiper,JR.-He's opinionated, and you here more of him than anyone else. He gives good insight too. For instance in 2001 he raved about Deuce McAllister, when everyone else thought he would be an injury-prone bust.
4. Nolan Naworcki-Pro Football Weekly-Their Draft Preview-I have already stopped in at 4 stores looking to buy, but it must not be out yet. He's not as good as the legendary Joel Buschbaum, who he replaced, but they have best football writing staff in the Business.
5. Don Banks-CNNSI-Best connections to the Vikings of any national scribe.
CBS Sportline-I don't find to be too good. Dan Pompei isn't too bad, but not as good as up here. Len Pasquerli is a good writer, but not a draft analyst. John Clayton can maybe give you a few good tips before the draft. I have also been told to look at the work of Rich Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News.
Local
1. www.kfan.com- Tom Pelisareo is probably the most connected guy to the team, due to his extensive time spent out there.
2. Kevin Seifert of the Minneapolis Star Tribune- I give him a slight edge over Sean Jensen of the Pioneer Press, just for amount of information that he gets out.
3. www.vikings.scouts.com-or www.vikingupdate.com- The official newsletter of the team, reports what they want you know, and hides what they don't. Still a good resource.
Mel Kiper's latest mock draft
7. Minnesota Vikings (from Oakland): Mike Williams (jr.), WR, USC
Williams has the size, strength and hands to be a perfect replacement for Randy Moss, who was traded for a package that included this pick. The Vikings have needs on defense as well but Williams will immediately address Minnesota's biggest loss of the offseason.
18. Minnesota Vikings: Dan Cody, DE, Oklahoma
The Vikings drafted end Kenechi Udeze in the first round last year, but the defensive line is a major need area for Minnesota and Cody has enough athleticism to be able to play on his feet at times. Cody also has a great motor and never quits so he would fit in nicely under head coach Mike Tice.

Wide Receivers and the Draft
Prospects at 18.
Troy Williamson-South Carolina-A 6'1 target with sub 4.4 speed, who is raw as a route runner due to the fact that he played in a running offense in College. He isn't great after the catch, but has the ability to adjust for balls. Some think he can take routes off at times, not a new trend for the Vikings. Needs to improve as a route-runner in the NFL, he can't get by and just size and speed.
Mark Clayton-Oklahoma-This 5'10 target is quick and fast, He's good at route-running, and adjusting for the ball. Clayton's big weakness is a lack of size, and the fact that he played in a three-wide receiver set in College.
Roddy White-6'1 with good speed from UAB. Good moves to get open after the catch, can adjust to the Ball. Mel Kiper.JR. is higher on him than some. Not a great route runner, hestruggles against zone coverage. More elusive as a route-runner than after the catch. Doesn't have great intial quickness.
Matt Jones-You're hearing a lot about this kid. A 6'6 240 lb quarterback from Arkansas with sub 4.4 speed, very good runner as a college Quarterback. He is very raw as a wide receiver, and some have questioned his work ethic. But this kid will be taken not long after the Vikings pick at 18.
2nd round
Courtney Roby-Indiana-He has 4.33 speed, He's tough with good body control, and elusive after the catch. Lack of strength, and under 6'1 holding him back.
Chris Henry-West Virgina-at 6'5 is faster than Mike Williams. Henry has good leaping ability. Good body control, and good hands. Elusive for his size. Questionable character is big concern. Needs to improve as a blocker and over the middle.
Jerome Mathis-Hampton-Fastest man in the draft who ran a 4.31-40. Good return man with good vision. The big concern is his size at under 6 feet, and questions on if he can beat press coverage.
Other prospects of note include durablity challenge Reggie Brown of Georgia, Small-school sleeper Vincent Jackson of Northern Colorado, the talented Fred Gibson also of Georgia, and speedy Terrence Murphy and Roscoe Parrish of Texas A%M, and Miami.
This is obvioulsy as I see it the Vikings biggest position of need, I wouldn't rule out taking two receivers a Number 1-hopefully Edwards or Williams, then if there was a potential deep threat later in the draft. I expect a receiver choosen in the first 2 rounds by the Vikings. In fact with the First Pick if they can.
