Thursday Notes
I''m going to be in Milwaukee till Sunday, but I am bringing a lot of material to study for when I post Sunday Night.
. Len Pasquarelli of espn.com agrees with me regarding my assesemnent of Derrick Johnson, and why I would have Shawne Merriman as the top defender in the draft.
. I think one strength Braylon Edwards has over Mike Williams is the ability to get a corner to turn his hips in coverage.
. Viking Update has a new mock that can be accessed at http://vikings.scout.com/2/357836.html
. Reggie Fowler's partners were in the Twin Cities, to try to promote a new Stadium. I haven't really commented much on the Vikings sale recently, due to draft musings. It keeps looking less likely by the day that Reggie Fowler has the assets to buy the team. This is only troublesome if the Vikings due to Red McCombs having to possibly keeping owning the team. McCombs could be problematic if he wants to save money by trading out of the 7th spot, for less than fair value.
. My post is what I am hearing as of today regarding the top 6 picks before the Vikings.
.San Fransisco-John Clayton says on ESPN insider there is about a 90 percent probablity that Aaron Rodgers gets a deal done, before early next week. So I am confident in my assesment here.
. Miami-They want to trade down, possibly with Tampa. If they stay here. I haven't seen a lot lean to Ronnie Brown, but don't discount them picking Alex Smith I guess either. So I would say I have a decent amount of confidence that barring a trade Ronnie Brown is the pick.
. Cleveland-I heard from John Clayton, I believe, that they think much higher of Alex Smith than Aaron Rodgers. That Romeo Crennel would probably take Smith if he was there. If he is not they could go best avalible player option in Braylon Edwards, or try to trade down. I have a decent amount of confidence that barring trades that Alex Smith will be the pick. There are rumors out there that Braylon Edwards blew off a meeting with Browns brass last week.
.Chicago-Two weeks ago I would have said the Bears were going to take Braylon Edwards, last week I thought Cedric Benson or Mike Williams, now I am hearing Cadillac Williams. This pick other than knowing it is probably going to be a RB or a WR is throwing me for a loop. I would lean very slightly towards Braylon Edwards as of tonight, with this pick though. But this spot is throwing me for a loop.
.Tampa Bay-I am hearing a possible trade up for Alex Smith, or they could take Mike Williams. It still seems though that Jon Gruden fell in love with Cadillac Williams at the Senior Bowl, and will take him here.
. Tennessee-I keep hearing Antrell Rolle with this pick. There is also the thought they could go with Mike Williams, but the indications hear have them leaning toward Antrelle Rolle.
. So this would leave both Mike Williams, and Cedric Benson for the Vikings. I keep hearing that the Vikings could very well take Cedric, even if Mike Williams is there. I haven't heard any other names, but it should be noted that ever since the Ryan Sims debacle, and that was great in hindsight. They seem to play things close to the vest so don't rule out a Derrick Johnson, or a Shawne Merriman. I would doubt they take Troy Williamson as I stated earlier. It should be noted that this is a deep draft for talent at the Wide Receiver Position.
. At 18 I believe the Vikings go best player. I would guess the names of highest prominence here would be David Pollack-DE-Georgia, Thomas Davis-S-Georgia, Mark Clayton-WR-Oklahoma, or maybe an Erasmus James-DE Wisconsin.
. In Round 2- I would actually be surpised if they took a kicker this high, due to their bad experience with Eddie Johnson. They could look G here, but I thought they were high on both Dorsey and Goldberg. They have expressed intrest in both Kevin Burnett-LB-Tennessee who could be hear, and Justin Tuck-DE Notre Dame. If they were to look G-like David Bass of Michigan, Chris Spencer of Ole Miss, Marcus Johnson of Ole Miss, Evan Mathis of Alabama, or a fast riser like Central Michigan's Eric Ghiacuic. There should be talented receivers avalible like a Roydell Williams of Tulane, Roscoe Parrish of Miami, Terrence Murphy of Texas A&M, Jerome Mathis of Hampton, Vincent Jackson of Nothern Colorado, or the fast rising Mark Bradley of Oklahoma. Young safety prospects could be on the horizon in Round 2 like Brandon Browner of Oregon State, Gerald Sensabaugh of North Carolina.
In Round 3 keep your eye out for CJ Moseley a big DT for Missouri. The Vikings could also look at players who could slide for various factors like DB Corey Webster of LSU, or WR'S Chris Henry of West Virgina, or Fred Gibson of Georgia.
That's all, talk to you Sunday.
